After enlisting in the British Army in 1914 at the onset of war in Europe, Dearmer penned verse about his experiences in battle in Gallipoli, Turkey, and The Somme, France. From 1936 until 1958, Dearmer worked as an examiner and censor of plays to Lord Chamberlain. He served there until the job was eliminated. During most of those years, and continuing on to 1960, he also was on staff of the Children’s Hour as an editor and contributor. Throughout his career, Dearmer published his works.
