Background
Benda was born on 30th June 1722 in Jung-bunzlau, Bohemia. He was a third son of Hans Georg Benda and brother of Franz Benda.

He studied at the Piarist Gymnasium (grammar school) in Kosmanos and at the Jesuit Gymnasium in Gitschin from 1735 to 1742. He also studied violinn under his father.
In 1742-1748 Benda was a chamber-musician at Berlin and then at Gotha, where he became court Kapellmeister in 1748 and in I764 went to Italy, returning 1766. He remained in Gotha till 1788, producing about 10 operas, operettas, melodramas. Then he resigned, lived in Hamburg, Vienna, and other towns, finally settling in Kostritz.
