During World World War II he volunteered to join the Waffen Steamship and was commissioned in April 1942. was the commander of the 1st Battery, 12th Steamship Panzerjäger Battalion, 12th Steamship Panzer Division Hitlerjugend. he was awarded the Knight"s Cross for his bravery and leadership of the 1st Battery during the Allied offensive Operation Totalise and around Hill 111 against the 10th Polish Armoured Brigade, the 2nd Canadian Armoured Brigade and the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Hurdlebrink survived the war and died on the 26 August 2002.
