Georg Misch studied at the Free University of Berlin where he received a Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1900.
Georg Misch started his career as an associate professor at the Philipps University of Marburg in 1911. He held this post until 1916 when he became an associate professor at the University of Göttingen. In 1919, Misch was appointed a full professor. He retired under pressure from the National Socialist government in 1935. In 1936 he emigrated to England and returned to Göttingen in 1946.
Georg Misch published his first book Geschichte der Autobiographie in 1907. Later he wrote such books as Der Weg in die Philosophie, Lebensphilosophie und Phänomenologie, and Vom Lebens- und Gedankenkreis Wilhelm Diltheys. Misch's book Geschichte der Autobiographie was translated into English as A History of Autobiography in Antiquity.
Georg Misch criticized the philosophical views of Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. He also developed a hermeneutic logic that was later published as Der Aufbau der Logik auf dem Boden der Philosophie des Lebens.
Georg Misch was a member of the Göttingen Academy of Sciences and Humanities.
