Developed anthracite deposits near Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. Organized Little Schuylkill Navigation, R. R. & Coal Company (progenitor of modern Reading System), 1828, opened 1831.
Executive agent Department of State, went to Europe, planned to introduce Pennsylvania anthracite coal there.
United States consul, Baden, Germany, 1831-1834, Leipzig, 1834-1837, Stuttgart, 1843-1845. Founder Zollvereinsblatt, political economy journal, 1843.
Visited England in vain attempt to prepare commercial alliance between that nation and Germany, 1846. Retired heartbroken to Augsburg.
