Career
Entered public service of Wurttemberg, 1806. Rose to ministerial undersecretary. Professor administration and politics U. Tubingen, 1817.
Lost post, 1819, because of political, economics ideas.
Elected to Diet of Wurttemberg from Reutlingen, 1819. Charged with sedition because of his advocacy of reforms, exiled.
Came to American, 1825, naturalized. Toured Atlantic states with Lafayette.
Became editor of Readinger Adler, Reading, Pennsylvania.
Loomed as a leading advocate of protective tariff and “American System” with his writings, address to Pennsylvania legislature, 1828, and dispute with Governor West. B. Giles of Virginia. Developed anthracite deposits near Tamaqua, Pennsylvania. Organized Little Schuylkill Navigation, R. R. & Coal Company (progenitor of modern Reading System), 1828, opened 1831.
Executive agent Department of State, went to Europe, planned to introduce Pennsylvania anthracite coal there.
United States consul, Baden, Germany, 1831-1834, Leipzig, 1834-1837, Stuttgart, 1843-1845. Founder Zollvereinsblatt, political economy journal, 1843.
Visited England in vain attempt to prepare commercial alliance between that nation and Germany, 1846. Retired heartbroken to Augsburg.
An architect of economics nationalism.
