( About the Book History texts study and interpret the pa...)
About the Book History texts study and interpret the past as it may be understood from written documents. The period before written records is called prehistory. Historians use a narrative to examine and analyse past events, and attempt to objectively determine the patterns of cause and effect. Historical studies are not an end in themselves, but also a way of providing perspective on events taking place in the present. (Excerpt from Civilization During the Middle Ages: Especia...)
Excerpt from Civilization During the Middle Ages: Especially in Relation to Modern Civilization History is commonly divided, for convenience'sake, into three great periods - ancient, medieval, and modern. Such a division is, to this extent, a natural one that each of these periods in a large view of it is distinguished by certain peculiarities from the others. Ancient his tory begins in an unknown antiquity, and is character ized by a very considerable progress of civilization along three or four separate lines, each the work of a distinct people, the results of whose labors are not com bined into a common whole until near the close of this period. As the period approaches its end the vitality of. The ancient races appears to decline and the progress of civilization ceases, except, perhaps, along a single line. ( About the Book Most of Great Britain, made up by Englan...)
About the Book Most of Great Britain, made up by England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, was conquered by Rome, which ruled the island for almost 500 years. Subjected to raids by Continental Angles, Jutes and Saxons, in 1066 England was conquered by the Normans, who were eventually assimilated. While Wales came under Anglo-Norman control in 1282, it wasn't officially annexed by England until the 16th century. After the Wars of Scottish Independence, the House of Stuart ruled Scotland uncontested for three centuries. In 1707 England, Scotland and Wales formed the United Kingdom, which fueled by such developments as the England-led Industrial Revolution, the Scottish Enlightenment, and the building of the expansive British Empire. The Empire came under extreme pressure during World War 1, and was further weakened by World War 2, resulting in its dissolution, and the establishment of the British Commonwealth of Nations in its place. Also in this Book History derives from Greek historia, meaning "inquiry, knowledge acquired by investigation". It is the study of the past as described in written documents, with events occurring before written records being considered prehistory. World history is generally considered a teaching topic rather than a research topic. There are many history text books of varying quality, with some addressing the teaching of history or historiography, the process of undertaking research in history. George Burton Adams was born on June 3, 1851 at Fairfield, Vermont, United States. He was of old New England ancestry, the son of Emeline Nelson and Rev. Calvin Carlton Adams, a Congregational clergyman.
Adams attended district schools but was prepared for college by his father, entering Beloit, where he took his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1873, and his Master of Arts degree in 1876. Intending to enter the ministry, he took his Bachelor of Divinity degree at Yale in 1877. He also studied abroad, taking his Ph. D. in history at Leipzig in 1886.
Adams was professor of history at Drury College from 1877 to 1888. In 1888, he was appointed professor of history in Yale College, where he spent the remainder of his life.
Adams's earliest publications did much to promote the study of medieval history in the United States. After editing Duruy's History of the Middle Ages (1891), he published in 1894 his own admirable survey of that period, Civilization during the Middle Ages. He had earlier issued a preliminary study on Mediæval Civilization in 1883; and in 1899 he published a text-book of European History. Besides these he issued in 1896 a sketch of the Growth of the French Nation.
Interested at all times in the development of the imperial federation movement in the British Empire, he published Rise of Imperial Federalism (1896), Origin and Results of Imperial Federation Movement in England (1899), and The British Empire and a League of Peace (1917).
But his main concern and contribution lay in the field of the English constitution. In 1905 he published his History of England from the Norman Conquest to the death of John, 1066-1216, as volume II of Hunt and Poole's Political History of England.
After his retirement from the active work of instruction in 1917, he summed up the study of a lifetime in a series of volumes: a Constitutional History of England (1920); the Origin of the English Constitution (1920); an Outline Sketch of English Constitutional History (1918); and the summation of his studies in medieval English legal and constitutional history, Council and Courts in Anglo-Norman England, published posthumously in 1926.
Through many years he was a leading figure in Yale University, in whose affairs he took an absorbing interest, and in whose counsels he was one of the most weighty advisers.
His influence was great both upon scholarship and education in the field of history.
Adams was also an editor of the American Historical Review (1895-1913).

Quotations:
"Note how good you feel after you have encouraged someone else. No other argument is necessary to suggest that never miss the opportunity to give encouragement. "
"There is no such thing as a 'self-made' man. We are made up of thousands of others. Everyone who has ever done a kind deed for us, or spoken one word of encouragement to us, has entered into the make-up of our character and of our thoughts, as well as our success. "
Adams was a corresponding member of the Royal Historical Society; Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences; member of the Colonial Society of Massachusetts and of the Massachusetts Historical Society; a leading member of the American Historical Association and a member of its executive council, and president of the Association (1907-1908).
Adams possessed an unusually clear, logical, and analytical mind, extraordinary industry, wide and accurate knowledge.
He was a great teacher. An admirable lecturer, clear, accurate, forcible; an exceptional and inspiring conductor of the work of more advanced students in his seminary, which was one of the chief centers of graduate instruction in his field in the United States; a most helpful and judicious adviser; had he written nothing his influence on his students would still have marked him as a leader of scholarship.
Belonging as he did to the school of constitutional historians, he none the less, especially in his work on medieval civilization and that on imperial federation, entered the wider fields of cultural and political affairs, where he carried the same qualities which distinguished his special work, a peculiar sanity of judgment and clarity of exposition, which contributed to his eminent place in his profession.
Adams married Ida Mary Clarke of Beloit on July 1, 1878.
