George Bethune Adams was a American lawyer and federal judge specializing in admiralty law. Served with 3 months vols., May to August 1861.

Background

George Bethune Adams was born on 3 April, 1845, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States. Son of Andrew W. and Mary A. Adams.

In 1904 he married Helen Jean Balfour on 12 July .

He enlisted in a Pennsylvania regiment in the United States Army in 1861, and served for three months before returning to school.

Career

Served with 3 months vols., May to August 1861. Also went to the front at the time of Lee’s invasion of Pennsylvania. On receiving discharge entered quartermaster’s department remaining until 1871, when be engaged in mercantile pursuits.

Studied law in office of Frederick S. Dickson. Admitted to practice in lower courts, 1878, in Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, 1880. Member Wilcox, Adams & Green.

Became judge The United States of America District Court, Southern district New York, August 30, 1901.
