He has been a producer for the British Broadcasting Corporation and was a British Broadcasting Corporation correspondent in Pakistan in the 1980s. He has also hosted British Broadcasting Corporation Radio 4"s Crossing Continents in the past He has authored a seminal book on Afghanistan.
He was British Broadcasting Corporation correspondent in Pakistan from 1986 to 1988, and British Broadcasting Corporation correspondent in Sri Lanka from 1994 to 1996.
He has written regularly for newspapers and journals including The Guardian and The Economist. In 2007 he was named International Radio Personality of the Year by the Association for International Broadcasting (Associate of the Institute of Bankers).
