Excerpt from Ancient Greece: From the German of Arnold H. L. Heeren The volume of which a translation is here offered to the public, forms in the original a portion of an extensive work, entitled, "Reflections on the Politics, Intercourse, and Commerce of the chief Nations of Antiquity." Mr. Heeren has accomplished his design only with respect to the nations of Asia and Africa. On those of Europe, he has published nothing further than the present series of essays, which relate solely to subjects connected with the political institutions of the Greeks, and may be regarded as an independent collection of historical sketches. It is on that larger work that the literary reputation of Mr. Heeren primarily depends. With respect to the Asiatic and African nations, he has discussed his subject in its full extent, and furnishes a more distinct account of their ancient condition, than has perhaps been given by any other writer. Early in life he was led to consider the history of the world as influenced by colonial establishments and commerce; and the results of his investigations, in a department of science to which he is enthusiastically attached, and to which he has uninterruptedly devoted the most precious years of a long life, are communicated in the elaborate production which we have named. (This volume (I of II) is a republish of the SIXTH EDITION...)
This volume (I of II) is a republish of the SIXTH EDITION published in 1889 which incorporates all inaccuracies or additional information discovered by Mr. Bancroft since the FIRST EDITION was published in 1882. We have attempted to accurately duplicate the original publishers format, language, phrasing and spelling. However, differences in older linotype layup and newer word processing formatting made an exact duplication in publishing next to impossible to accomplish. The two historical periods involved, the late eighteenth century when most of the quotes and letters were written, and the middle nineteenth century when the original authors narrative text of this volume was written, the phraseology and spelling were sometimes different. We have also been careful to accurately reproduce each and every character of the original interior text. The cover was designed to reflect modern paperback standards. We also added the watermark text in all original blank pages. The page count and sequence has been left unchanged.

CHAPTER I. EARLY VOYAGES. FRENCH SETl'LEMENTS IN AMERICA. THE enterprise of Columbus, the most memorable maritime enterprise in the history of the world, formed between Europe and America the communication which will never cease. Nearly three centuries before tlle Christian era, Aristotle, following the lessons of the Pythagoreans, had taught that the earth is a sphere, and that the water which bounds Europe on the west washes the eastern shores of Asia. Instructed by him, the Spaniard Seneca believed that a ship, with a fair wind, could sail from Spain to the Indies in a few days. The opinion was revived in the middle ages by A verroes, the Arab commentator of Aristotle. Science and observation assisted to confirm it; and poets of ancient and of more recent times had foretold that empires beyond the ocean would one day be revealed to the daring navigator. George Bancroft was born in Worcester, Massachussets, United States on October 3, 1800. His father, Aaron Bancroft, was a Unitarian minister.
At 17 George went from Harvard to the University of Göttingen, Germany, where he received his doctorate in 1820.
In 1822 he briefly joined the Harvard faculty, teaching Greek. Unable to reform Harvard's teaching methods, Bancroft left to found (with J. G. Cogswell) the Round Hill School, a progressive school at Northampton, Massachussets. Bancroft had left the school in 1831, having been drawn to politics and history. To the dismay of fellow intellectuals he ardently supported Andrew Jackson and Martin Van Buren. In 1837 he was named collector of the Port of Boston. Now high in the councils of the Democratic party, he was appointed secretary of the Navy by President James Polk. Bancroft instituted reforms in the service and founded the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Maryland. From 1846 to 1849 Bancroft was minister to England, where he gathered additional materials to continue the history he had been working on for many years. The first volume of Bancroft's History of the United States from the Discovery of the Continent appeared in 1834. In the next 40 years nine more volumes were published, carrying the narrative to the close of the American Revolution. In his first volume Bancroft stated his main theme, which, with variations, echoed throughout the history. Like his fellow romantic historians John Lothrop Motley and William Prescott, Bancroft believed that liberty and progress had found their highest fulfillment in the United States. Bancroft's writing was at its best in detailing the events during the 2 years leading up to July 4, 1776. In these pages he evoked with great skill the spirit of the Revolution. From 1849 to 1867 Bancroft remained busy at his history. In 1867 President Andrew Johnson, indebted to Bancroft as ghost writer, named him minister to Berlin, where he remained until 1874, delighting in the company of Bismarck and distinguished German historians. After Bancroft's diplomatic career ended, he published the two-volume History of the Formation of the Constitution of the United States of America (1882). Now past 80 he continued to write in the spirit of his youth. It was his "loud and uncritical Americanism" which repelled some of his contemporaries as well as later critics. His scholarship was not impeccable, his prose too lush. Fame and wealth from his histories came to the vigorous little man who stood tall in his country's esteem. His many admirers joined in mourning his death, in Washington, D. C. , on January 17, 1891.
