George Barclay

Diplomat

Sir George Head Barclay Knight Commander of the Order of Street Michael and Saint George KCSI Commander of the Royal Victorian Order was a British diplomat.

Background

Barclay was the son of Henry Ford Barclay and Richenda Louisa Gurney.

Education

He was educated at Eton College and Trinity College, Cambridge.

Career

He joined the Foreign Office on 24 July 1886, and in 1888 became attaché in Washington, District of Columbia In 1891 he was Secretary of Legation in Rome and between 1897 and 1898 was posted to Madrid. He subsequently served in Constantinople and Tokyo.

From 1908 to 1912 he was Envoy Extraordinary and Ministers Plenipotentiary to Persia. In 1913, Barclay was invested as a Knight Commander of the Orders of Street Michael and Street George, and of the Star of India.

He retired 1920.

Achievements

  • He was invested as a Companion of the Order of Street Michael and Street George in 1898. In 1906 he was made a Commander of the Royal Victorian Order.
