He studied at Wyggeston Queen Elizabeth's Grammar School in Leicester, then he entered Jesus College in Oxford. In 1896 he became a student of Oxford University.
Career
First, he worked as an Assistant Master at Raffle's Institution in Singapore in 1901. In 1903 he became a Vice-Principal in Shanghai Public School. Since 1904 he became a Headmaster of this school. During his work he received a degree Master of Arts.
