About the Book Constitutional law defines the role, powers, and structure of different entities within a state, i.e. the executive, the legislature, and the judiciary; and the rights of citizens and, in federated countries, the relationship between the central government and the state, provincial, or territorial governments. In most countries, like the United States, India, and Singapore, constitutional law is based on a document accepted when the nation was formed. Other constitutions, e.g. the United Kingdom's, rely heavily on unwritten rules called constitutional conventions. The status of these conventions within constitutional law varies, with the terms of conventions some cases being strongly contested. George Willis Botsford was born on May 9, 1862 and descended from Henry and Elizabeth Botsford who came from Leicestershire, England, and settled in Milford, Connecticut, in 1636. He was the son of William Hiram and Margaret (Johnson) Botsford, who were living in West Union, Iowa.
Botsford received his early education in public schools and was graduated as a bachelor of arts at the University of Nebraska in 1884. The same university conferred upon him the degree of A. M. in 1889.
After a short period of teaching and a brief sojourn at Johns Hopkins University, he entered Cornell University as a graduate student, where he attained the degree of Ph. D. in 1891.
Botsford had been a professor of Greek at Kalamazoo College, 1886-90. He was a professor of Greek in Bethany College, 1891-95; then was appointed instructor in the history of Greece and Rome at Harvard University, where he remained six years, until 1901. He was appointed lecturer on ancient history at Columbia University in 1902, instructor in 1903, adjunct professor in 1905, and professor in 1910, and was thus one of the few professors of ancient history in the United States.
In the year 1909-10, and again in 1913, he was engaged in historical research in Italy. Botsford was a scholar of unusual ability, extraordinary industry, and great singleness of purpose.
On the last day of his life, he came from his home at Mt. Vernon to take up his appointed work at the University, and immediately upon his arrival complained of feeling unwell. He was escorted to his study where, before a physician could reach him, he died of acute indigestion. Death came upon him in the midst of his activity as a teacher and while his capacity for the productive scholarship was at its height.
George Botsford's original contributions to historical knowledge were made, for the most part, in articles published in periodicals, but his books, even when they were designed primarily as textbooks for schools, not only contained the generally known and accepted facts but also embodied the results of serious original research. Most of these books have been widely used in schools and colleges, and the reputation of their author is deservedly great.

Indeed he was so devoted to his work as to be almost a recluse. He was very highly esteemed and admired by his colleagues on account of his scholarly achievements but had comparatively little social intercourse with them.
Botsford was a member of the American Philological Association and the American Historical Association and at the time of his death was a member of the board of editors of the Political Science Quarterly.
Botsford was powerfully built and perhaps of somewhat less than the average height. Apart from the intellectual quality of his face, there was nothing especially striking in his appearance. He was rather shy and not greatly interested in general society.
George Willis Botsford married Lillie M. Shaw, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, on August 30, 1891.
