After studying at Ripon College Cuddesdon he was ordained in 1935. He was a curate of Street Alban’s Stockport until 1937 when he became a missionary priest in the Diocese of Masabi, Tanzania. He was the Archdeacon of Newala from 1955 to 1964 and then Rector of Street Alban’s Dar-es-Salaam until 1969 when he became Warden of Street Cyprian’s Theological College, Masasi, his last post before ordination to the episcopate.
