Handley was raised in Connecticut. He taught at Dominican College and Northern Arizona University before joining the Brigham Young University faculty in 1998. Handley has served as chair of Brigham Young University"s department of humanities, classics and comparative literature.
Handley"s works have focused on the interaction of culture and the physical environment.
Handley"s most cited work appears to be Caribbean Literature and the Environment: Between Nature and Culture co-authored with Elizabeth M. DeLoughrey.
