The son of George Abercromby, 2nd Baron Abercromby and Honorary
He was commissioned into the 51st Foot. In 1817 he purchased a lieutenancy in the 3rd Foot Guards and in 1818 exchanged into the 3rd Dragoon Guards as a cornet. In 1821 he purchased a lieutenantcy in the regiment and in 1822 he purchased a captaincy in the 12th Light Dragoons.
By 1828 he was back in the 3rd Dragoon Guards as a major and in that year he purchased an unattached infantry Lieutenant-colonelcy.
By 1842 he was a colonel and in that year he exchanged into the Coldstream Guards as a lieutenant-colonel. On the death of his father on 15 February 1843 he succeeded to the title of 3rd Baron Abercromby.
He was Lord Lieutenant of Clackmannanshire, 1840-1852. On his death, he was buried at Tullibody.

He was a Whig Member of Parliament for Clackmannanshire, 1824-1826 and 1830–1831.
