He got basic training in architecture studied in Paris at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
Returning to the United States in 1893 Mr. Dean began his career in Minneapolis as draftsman for the late W. Channing Whitney, afterward found employment in the Boston office of Shepley, Rutan & Coolidge. The firm at that time had several buildings under construction in Chicago and Dean was sent there to supervise the work. On its completion he decided to remain in the city and open his own office. In 1903 he was joined by his brother Arthur in partnership, and under the name of Dean & Dean was active through his remaining years.
The Dean & Dean's most important works were in the industrial field, including buildings for the Goodman Manufacturing Plant in Chicago erected between 1903 and 1914; office building and houses at the U. S. Steel Corporation Plant at Gary, Ind., 1906-11; homes for the workers at the Company Plant in Farrell, Pa., 1912-13; and office building and various smaller structures for the company at Duluth, Minn.
