He was educated at Christ"s College, Canterbury and Brasenose College, Oxford.

After wartime service with the Buffs he was ordained in 1923 and embarked on his ecclesiastical career with a curacy in Timaru. Later he was Vicar of Pahiatua then Petone and finally (before his elevation to the Episcopate) of Street Matthew, Auckland. During World World War II he was a Prisoner of war at Vincigliata in Italy.
After resigning his See he was Rural Dean of Rotherham and an Assistant Bishop in the Diocese of Sheffield until his retirement in 1960.
