Appointed clerk of Council of Dublin, 1737. Member English House of Commons, 1741-1761. Served with British Army, became colonel, 1746, major general 1755, Lieutenant general, 1757.
Commander-in-chief Lower Army of Rhine, 1758, relieved of command and court martialled for disobeying orders, 1760.
Regained rank by 1765, also became member Privy Council, Lord North’s cabinet. Lord commissioner of trade and plantations, 1775-1779, in this capacity supervised American colonies, supported and ineptly implemented colonial legislation, thereby furthering discontent which led to American Revolution.
Member English House of Commons, 1741-1761.
