George Henderson was born on June 18, 1932, in Hurtsboro, Alabama, United States. He was the son of Kidd Large and Lula Mae (Crawford) Henderson.
From 1950 to 1952, Henderson attended Michigan State University. In 1957, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree, Master of Arts in 1959, and Ph.D., in 1965, all from Wayne State University.
From 1957 to 1959, Henderson served at the Church Youth Services in Detroit, Michigan, as a social caseworker. He worked at Detroit Housing Commission, in Detroit, as a social economist, from 1960 to 1961, and at Detroit Urban League, in Detroit, as community services director, from 1961 to 1963.
From 1963 to 1964, Henderson worked at the Community Action for Detroit Youth, in Detroit, as a program director, then, at Wayne State University, as an assistant director of Delinquency Control Training Center, from 1964 to 1965. He also worked at Detroit Public Schools, as an assistant director of intercultural relations, as an assistant to the superintendent of schools, from 1965 to 1967. At the University of Oklahoma, in Norman, he was an associate professor of sociology and education, from 1967 to 1969, then a professor of human relations and education, beginning 1969, also S.N. Goldman Professor of Human Relations, David Ross Boyd Professor, and Regents' Professor, dean of College of Liberal Studies, from 1996 to 2000.
Henderson also worked, from 1965 to 1967, at Harper Hospital School of Nursing, as an instructor, and at Langston University, as visiting professor, from 1969 to 1970.
From 1980 to 1981, at the U.S. Air Force Academy, he was a distinguished visiting professor and distinguished lecturer at Fayetteville State University, in 1999, and also a lecturer at Wayne State University and University of Michigan.

Henderson was a board member of Southwest Center for Human Relations, Friends of the Oklahoma Museum of Higher Education, Oklahoma Center for the Book, and National Conference for Community and Justice.
On August 9, 1952, Henderson married Barbara (Beard) Henderson. They had seven children: George Jr., Michele, Faith Mosley, Lea Murr, Joy Baldwin, Lisa, Dawn Johnson.
