Houghton"s medal was won for his actions at Elk River, Tennessee, where he led a party that saved a bridge, on July 2, 1863. The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to Private George L. Houghton, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 2 July 1863, while serving with Company Doctorate, 104th Illinois Infantry, in action at Elk River, Tennessee.
