He was educated at the Jesuit College, and received his training and experience in architectural offices of New Orleans.
Shortly after the turn of the century he moved to Columbia, and in his early practice operated under the firm name of Shand & Lafaye. His works during that period included a number of public buildings, one of which was the Clarendon County Court House at Manning, S. C. Later, between 1911 and 1917, he carried on work alone.
Joined by his son Robert S. Lafaye in 1917 in organizing a partnership, he continued active thruout his remaining years, identified with a number of important architectural projects in Columbia. Among these should be named the State Hospital, a complete program covering the years between 1917 and 1939; State Training School, 1917-1939; Federal Land Bank, 1934; Worid War Memorial, 1928-39; State Office Building and various other structures.
Following his decease Robert Lafaye became head of the firm of Lafaye, Lafaye & Fair, with George E. Lafaye, Jr. a third partner in the organization.
A prominent member of the profession in Columbia during his long career, Mr. Lafaye had been an Associate of the South Carolina Chapter, A. I. A. after 1916, and for a number of years served on the State Architectural Examining Board.
