Entered service of Government, of India, 1889, on Special Duty with Sikkim Field Force, 1889-1890. Special Duty in Chinese Turkestan, 1890-1893. Received, 1896, the thanks of His (or Her) Majesty’s Government, for his services on the Anglo-Russian Pamir Boundary Commission.
Received, 1897, the thanks of the Kashmir Durbar for his work in Chinese Turkestan in connection with the release of about 600 slaves of Kashmir origin.
Received thanks of Government of India, 1906. Is the discoverer of the Macartney Central Asian Manuscripts. British Consul at Kashgar, Chinese Turkestan, since 1900.
