Employed on special mission to inquire into the condition of the aborigines of W. Australia, 1896-1897. Appointed Aide-de-camp to Governor of W. Australia (Sir Gerard Smith, Knight Commander of St. Michael and St. George). Resigned, 1899; joined South African Light Horse, 1899 (despatches thrice).
Decorated for services in South African Boer War. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900; 3rd (S.R.) Battalion The Cheshire Regiment; late S. African Light Horse.
