Joined 3rd West Yorkshire Regiment. Passed school of instruction, Chelsea. Resigned commission; joined Perth (Western Australia) Artillery.
Employed on special mission to inquire into the condition of the aborigines of West. Australia, 1896-1897.
Appointed Aide-de-camp to Governor of West. Australia (Sir Gerard Smith, Knight Commander of Saint Michael and Saint George). Resigned, 1899; joined South African Light Horse, 1899 (despatches thrice).
Decorated for services in South African Boer War. Companion of the Distinguished Service Order 1900.
3rd (South.R.) Battalion The Cheshire Regiment. Late South. African Light Horse.
