George A. Mathews was born in 1860 in Brunswick, Maine, United States.
Mr. Mathews had architectural training in the office of Henry Van Brunt and later went with him to Kansas City during the eighties. In 1898 he began practice for himself, and during a brief career, cut short by death in his forty-third year, designed various types of buildings in the city. Among the most important were the First Christian Science Church, the Burnham-Hanna-Munger Store, and a new factory for Proctor & Gamble. Mr. Mathews also prepared plans for buildings in other cities, including the Sabine Hotel at Port Arthur, Texas.
