George McGhee attended Southern Methodist University, from which he graduated in 1928. In 1933 he finished his studies at University ot Oklahoma, receiving Bachelor of Science degree. In 1937 he became a graduate of Oxford University with Doctor of Philosophy degree. Then Mr. McGhee attended University of London till 1937.
Mr. McGhee served as a president of National Geophysical Company, Dallas, between 1937 and 1939. He was a partner of DeGolyer, MacNaughton and McGhee from 1940 to 1941. Since 1940 he became an independent explorer for and producer of oil.
From 1941 till 1943 George McGhee served as a senior Liaison Officer at OPM and WPB. During 1942-1943 he worked as United States Deputy Executive Secretary at Combined Raw Materials Board. He was appointed special assistant to the Under-Secretary of State for Economics Affairs (1947).
Mr. McGhee was a co-ordinator for Aid to Greece and Turkey, Department, of State (1949). Later he was appointed special representative of Secretary of State to Near East on Palestine Refugee problem with personal rank of Minister (1949).He was a special Assistant to Secretary of State starting from 1949.
George McGhee served as an assistant secretary to Near East, South Asian and African Affairs between 1949 to 1951. In 1951-1953 he was an ambassador to Turkey. In 1951 Mr. McGhee became n adviser to N.A.T.O. Council, Ottawa.
During the period of 1946-1951 Mr. McGhee held the post of a director of Institute of Inter-American Affairs, Inter-American Education Foundation. In 1946 he was appointed director of United States Commercial Company and later director of Foreign Service Education Foundation.
Between 1958 and 1959 he occupied the position of a consultant at National Security Council, in 1961 he was appointed counsellor of the department of State and Chairman Policy Planning Council. In 1961-1963 George McGhee worked as an under-secretary of State for Political Affairs.
Some time later Mr. McGhee resumed his office as an ambassador to Federation Republic of Germany (1968), ambassador at Large (1968-1969). He was a director of Panama Canal Company (1962-1963), Mobil Oil Company (1969-1982), Procter & Gamble Company (1969-1982), American Security & Trust Company (1969-1982). Mr. McGhee acted as a translator at World Airlines from 1976 till 1982.
Between 1973 and 1976 he worked as a chair of Board Saturday Review/World, in 1976-1978 chairman of Smithsonian Associations. Then he became an owner McGhee Production Company.
During 1953-1961 Mr. McGhee was elected director of Trustees, Robert College, Istanbul, Brookings Institute (1954-1961), Committee Economics Development (since 1957), Aspen Institute Humanistic Studies (since 1958), Vassar College (1959-1961), Duke University (1962-1978). George McGhee held the posts of a chairman of Business Council for Institute Understanding (1969-1974), chairman English Speaking Union, United States of America (1970-1974), deputy chairman of Institute Council of the English Speaking Union (1974).
From 1971 till 1975 he was appointed chairman of National Trust for Historic Preservation, Institute Manager and Development Institute since 1972, Federation City Housing Corporation starting from 1972, Piedmont Environmental Council Trustee, George C. Marshall Research Foundation, American Council on Germany, The American University, The Asia Foundationd, director of Atlantic Council from 1975, Atlantic Institute for Institute Affairs since 1977. He became a cordier fellow of Advisory Council, Columbia University, in 1977. In 1970-1974 he was elected president of Federation City Council.
Mr. McGhee was a chairman of Board of directors Institute for the Study of Diplomacy, Georgetown University. He was a contributor to periodicals, including Bulletin of the Geological Society of London, Stale Department Bulletin, Foreign Affairs, Gewer-Schafliche Rundschau, Werk und Wir, Europa Archiv Universitas, Europa, Saturday Review, Washington Post, Washington Star, New York Times, Paris Tribune, Foreign Service Journal, Reader's Digest, and U.S. News and World Report.
