Was in the store ship s.s. Lybia, Abyssinian Expedition, 1867.
Wrecked in the s.s. Sylvia, off Gibraltar, 1868.
Joined the ang-tsze Rivei Service, 1869. Became Admiralty pilot under Admiral Sir G. O. Willes, Knight Commander of the Bath, 1882. Served continuously and been present under all circumstances since, when His (or Her) Majesty ships have been required to quell riots and protect life and property on the River Yang-tsze, notably in 1900 under Admiral Sir Edward Seymour, Knight Grand Cross of the Bath (China medal).
Piloted ILM.S. Glory to Hankow, 1903 (congratulations of Admiral Sir Cyprian A. G. Bridge, Knight Commander of the Bath, and the Admiralty).
Surveyed the Yang-tsze River from Woosung to Hankow", 1877-1880, the work commended by the Hydrograplier and published by the Admiralty. Decorated for valuable services to the Royal Navy. Senior Pilot on the ang-tsze River.
