He came to this country during the mid 19th century, and practiced first in Philadelphia. However, all of his known works were in Alabama. Generally ascribed to him is the President’s House on the campus of the University of Tuscaloosa, a building of Classic design built about 1840, and other structures there which did not survive the Civil War. Mr. Nichols is also identified with the reconstruction of the State Capitol at Montgomery in 1849, after it had been damaged by fire. Associated with him was Stephen D.
