George Poer Oslin was born on August 5, 1899 in West Point, Georgia, United States. Son of Reuben Jefferson and Mary (Poer) Oslin.
Oslin was a student at Duke University until 1919. He graduated from Mercer University with a Bachelor of Arts in 1920 and from the Graduate School of Journalism at Columbia University in 1921.
Oslin was a reporter for several newspapers, including the Newark Evening News. In 1929, he joined the staff at Western Union and worked as public relations director. In 1933, he had the idea of sending a “singing” telegram to popular singer Rudy Vallee for his birthday. Over the years, Western Union has made millions of dollars delivering these singing messages. Oslin went on to write three books about the history of the telecommunications industry, including "The Story of Telecommunications", "The Telegraph Industry", and "Talking Wires: The Way of Life in the Telegraph Industry". He worked at Western Union until 1964.
Oslin died on October 24, 1996, in Delray Beach, Florida.
He married Louise Love on January 31, 1922. The couple had 3 children: Louise, Jeanne, Catherine. His second wife was Susanna Meigs, they married on December 22, 1956.
