This book provides a study of the transformation of the Latin American oil system from one in which the international oil companies dominated to one which is dominated by the main state oil companies, and an account of how some of the more important of the state companies have operated. This comprehensive guide to the evolution of the Latin American oil system combines in one volume a synthesis of material from secondary sources and original research and thus provides an invaluable reference for all concerned with the history and economy of Latin America and with the development and functioning of the international oil industry.

(The Triumph of Politics offers a comparative and historic...)
The Triumph of Politics offers a comparative and historical interpretation of Venezuela's Chavez, Bolivia's Morales and Ecuador's Correa - South America's most prominent ‘21st century socialists'. It argues that the claims of these 21st century socialists should be taken seriously even though not necessarily at face value. The authors show how the consensual market oriented policymaking that characterized almost all of South America in the 1990s has now given way to something quite different. Polarization and intense political conflict have returned to much of the region. Although the Left has not always been the beneficiary of this changed pattern, the ‘21st century' governments of Chavez, Morales and Correa have been agenda setters. The questions raised by their emergence, style of governance and policy orientations resonate across Latin America and beyond. It is likely that the kind of politics with which they have been associated will be influential in the region for quite some time to come.

(Organized crime in Mexico has been responsible for a worr...)
Organized crime in Mexico has been responsible for a worrying increase in violence in that country since Felipe Calderon assumed the presidency in 2006. The country's main criminal gangs are now a real challenge to the Mexican state. Government policies aimed at combating that threat have not been very successful to date. While it is certainly possible to exaggerate the threat posed to the Mexican state by organized crime, the real problems posed are serious enough. This book considers the issue from a variety of viewpoints. The essential argument is that the organized crime is best combated by institutional reforms directed at strengthening the rule of law and winning over public opinion, rather than by a heavy reliance on armed force. Some such reforms have indeed taken place in Mexico and are discussed in the book. (The Chinese Convertible Bond Market is the first book wri...)
The Chinese Convertible Bond Market is the first book written on the increasingly important Chinese CB market and the complexities of the instruments. The book covers all aspects of CBs from the issuer's perspective, the hedger's perspective and the outright investor's perspective. Chinese CBs possess the complexities of a generic CB: (1) an equity call option; (2) a straight corporate bond equivalent with concomitant sensitivities to interest rates and credit; (3) a short call option that can be exercised by the issuer; and (4) a sequence of long put options that can be exercised by the investor. Then, there are a number of specific terms and conditions which are unique to them and make them particularly difficult to price. In The Chinese Convertible Bond Market, George and Mark show in a very straightforward manner, using the classical binomial framework, how to model a CB incorporating all of these complexities. There are a number of interesting innovations in the book, one of which is the treatment of persistent mispricing. Most finance and academic literature assumes the world is a 'fair place' and that CBs trade and behave according to their theoretical value, when in fact there have been prolonged periods when this clearly has not been the case. As well as pricing and estimating sensitivities, this book is also the first to consider the topic of Chinese corporate CB issuance. Why do some corporations issue CBs and why is it becoming more popular in China? Understanding ways of 'sculpting' the inherent optionality to meet their needs as well as the broad investment community is essential. This book should prove to be a valuable addition to the libraries of every capital raising section in Corporate China and contribute to the further understanding of these complex and interesting instruments.
