Joined R.A. 1865; served Canada during Fenian Raids, 1866 and 1870 (medal and 2 clasps). Aide-de-camp to General Sir F. Roberts during Afghan War, 187S-80 (despatches thrice, Afghan medal and three clasps, bronze star for march from Kabul to Kandahar, brevets of Major and Lieutenant-Colonel). Military Secretary to Sir F. Roberts in Madras, S4.
Assistant-Adjutant-General for R.A. in India, 1887-1889. Commanded a 2nd class district, Bengal, 1889-1894, with rank of Brigadier-General. Commanded 1st Infantry Brigade, Isazai Expedition, 1892.
