Joined 100th Royal Canadians, exchanging later to 1st Royals. Passed Staff College. Served on the staffs of the Western, Southern, and Aldershot Districts.
Was Deputy - Assistant - Quarter master-General during the Afghan campaign of 1879 on the staffs of Generals Sir Donald Stewart and Sir Michael Biddulph (despatches twice, brevet of Lieutenant-Colonel). Commanded 2nd Battalion Royal Scots, 1886. Assistant-Adjutant-General Gibraltar, 1891.
Commanded Curragh District, 1900, and was at intervals Commander of the Forces in Ireland. Member of the South African Deportation, 1901. Received thanks of Government.
Retired 1904; Colonel of the Prince of Wales’s Leinster Regiment, 1910. Is a Knight of Grace of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.
