Fredericksburg!, is notable for winning the 2003 Lincoln Prize, a $50,000 award for excellence in Civil War scholarship. The book is notable for retaining a traditional military analysis of the Civil War while exploring the social context and importance of the conflict.
The book was also awarded the Jefferson Davis Award and the Douglas Southall Freeman Award. His most recent book is God"s Almost Chosen Peoples: A Religious History of the American Civil War (2010) which won the Jefferson Davis Award and was a Choice Outstanding Academic Title. He is a past president of the Society of Civil War Historians and at the University of Alabama has received the Burnum Distinguished Faculty Award and the Blackmon-Moody Award.
