Rivera was elected from Colorado"s State Senate District 3 which includes Pueblo, Colorado. Giron was the second ever Colorado legislator to be successfully recalled in the state"s history. In 1963 they returned to Mexico (along with Rivera"s grandmother) to process their visas and returned to the United States. legally, later becoming United States. citizens.
Rivera attended Catholic schools for 12 years, first at Saint Leander’s Grade School and graduated in 1966 from Pueblo Catholic High School (which became Roncalli Middle School in the early 1970s).
He has an Associates Degree in General Studies from Pueblo Community College. He joined the Pueblo Police Department in 1971 and served as a Patrolman, Corporal, Sergeant, Captain and Deputy Chief, before retiring in 2005.
They also have a granddaughter Sarah. Rivera supports a statewide school voucher system.
He is also an advocate for lessened regulations on guns.
