He is currently the associate head coach and defensive line coach at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, a position he has held since 2008. Small served as the head football coach at Kentucky State University from 1995 to 2000 and at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University from 2003 to 2005, compiling a career college football record of 49–53. Small was the 25th head football coach for the Kentucky State University located in Frankfort, Kentucky and he held that position for six seasons, from 1995 until 2000.
