The young man was graduated in architecture at the University of Pennsylvania in 1887.
After beginning work as draftsman in the office of a Mr. Castor (early practitioner in Philadelphia) he was taken into partnership and carried on work in that association until 1892. Later he practiced jointly with Charles Woodnut until 1925 with an office in the Stephen Girard Building. During Mr. Steams' active years his practice was general in character, including hospitals and other public buildings.
