(Excerpt from The Epistles of Paul in Modern English: A Pa...)
Excerpt from The Epistles of Paul in Modern English: A Paraphrase The reading of a literal, or verbal, trans lation of Paul's letters is attended by many difficulties. The apostle's carelessness of form, his vehemence in utterance, his use of complex figures, and his involved and elliptical style, are among the peculiarities which often render his meaning Obscure. Now a translation can only represent in English words the form of the origi nal; it is debarred not only from introducing explanatory words, but even, to a great extent. (The present volume includes the apostolic discourses cont...)
The present volume includes the apostolic discourses contained in the earlier chapters of A cts and the Epistles of James, First Peter, Jude, Second Peter, First Timothy, Titus, Second Timothy, Hebrews, First, Second, and Third John, in the order named. The dates of many of these books are uncertain, and no order can claim to be more than approximately chronological. In general, however, the sermons from A cts, the Epistle of James, and the First Epistle of Peter may be said to represent the earlier forms and stages of Christian teaching, while Epistles like Hebrews and First John belong to its later period. The Epistles to Timothy and Titus are included in this volume, partly because so many scholars doubt their Pauline authorship in their present form and, especially, because in any case they reflect the work of Timothy and Titus in ecclesiastical administration more than the theology of the apostle. The first ten Epistles of Paul, reproduced in The Messages of Paul, present to us the apostles doctrinal system. The Pastorals, whatever view be taken of their authorship, have little bearing upon that system, but deal with relations and conditions which more appropriately place them in the later group of New Testament writings. The same method of treatment has been adopted as in The Messages of Paul. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regar...)
Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regarded and treated primarily as a subject of investigation, I have accordingly approached it from the historical side, and have aimed to state the problems to be considered and to define my positions respecting them in an historical and inductive method. I have tried to judge the various opinions reviewed and to test my own by means of the fundamental Christian concepts of God and of man. The treatment has been made as objective as possible. It has been my aim to describe and estimate conflicting theories with fairness. My own judgments, with the reasons for them, have been frankly given. It is not to be expected, of course, that they will commend themselves to the acceptance of all readers, but I trust that those who may dissent from them may still find something in the book by which they may be interested or instructed. The present discussion presupposes a general knowledge of Biblical Theology and of the History of Christian Doctrine, such as is furnished by the relevant sections of my Theology of the New Testament and Professor Fisher s History of Christian Doctrine, earlier volumes of the International Theological Library. ( About the Book Books dealing with State and local histo...)
About the Book Books dealing with State and local histories in the United States may examine a city, a suburb, a municipality, a region, a community, an association, a church group, or the entire State. In fact, local history, is the largest category of history publishing. Often being of the community that is the subject of the book, local or regional historians can provide a specific insight into their subject matter. Also in this Book The next decades up to World War 1 saw large migrations from Europe and massive growth in the US economy. The US had a short but decisive influence on World War 1, suffered during the Great Depression, and had an even greater decisive influence on the outcome of World War 2. The US then engaged in a Cold War with its military and ideological adversary, the USSR, which disintegrated in 1991. Over the 20th century the US was not just a dynamo of technological advancement, but also contributed greatly to world growth. About us Leopold Classic Library has the goal of making available to readers the classic books that have been out of print for decades. clergyman educator theologian author
George was born on July 13, 1854 in Spencer, Tioga County, New York, United States, the son of Thomas Jackson and Weltha (Barker) Stevens. His father was a farmer of Dutch descent.
Three years in Ithaca Academy prepared him to enter Cornell University in 1873. After two years he transferred, for pecuniary reasons, to the University of Rochester, graduating from that institution in 1877. For a year he studied in the Rochester Theological Seminary, then entered the middle class of Yale Divinity School, where he completed his course in 1880.
He continued his theological studies and received the degree of doctor of philosophy from Syracuse University in 1883.
Stevens was ordained and installed over the First Congregational Church of Buffalo, New York, on September 28, 1880.
Two years later he was granted leave of absence by his parish to study in Germany. Here he displayed such marked proficiency that the faculty of the University of Jena encouraged him to submit a thesis ("The Rational Grounds of Theism") and stand an examination for the degree of doctor of divinity, which was granted him in 1886.
His brilliant record as a student led to his election, in the autumn of the same year, to the Buckingham Professorship of New Testament Criticism and Interpretation in Yale Divinity School, succeeding Timothy Dwight, who was entering on his duties as president of Yale College.
In what appeared a slight illness he died suddenly on June 22, 1906, in the fifty-second year of his age.

(Christian doctrine of salvation. The theme has been regar...)
As a theologian Stevens was chiefly interested in the reinterpretation of religious truth in the light of the best scholarship of his day.
His mind, eminently clear, balanced and energetic, neither clouded nor illumined by mysticism, made him a successful expounder of his substantial learning. His abounding vitality, his ability to kindle his own intellectual fires, his ready command of his acquisitions, enabled him almost at will to do his daily stint of writing and produce so many volumes of solid merit. A certain radiant healthfulness won him friends and strongly influenced his pupils.
On November 23 of 1880 was married to Kate A. Mattison of Oswego, New York.
