George Winchester Stone, Jr. was born on December 18, 1907, in Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
George attended Dartmouth College and received a doctorate in English from Harvard University. In his later years, Stone obtained several honorary degrees from Middlebury College, Hofstra University and George Washington University.
In 1930, Stone began his teaching career at George Washington University, working there until 1954. During World War II, he served in the United States Navy. Later, from 1956 to 1963, George edited the journal PMLA. He also taught at New York University, retiring from the educational establishment in 1978. Besides, during his tenure at New York University, he also held the post of dean of the graduate school and the libraries.
During his lifetime, Stone penned a number of works. "The Journal of David Garrick, Describing His Visit to France and Italy in 1763", his first book, was published in 1939, and "A Naval Log", which he wrote with W. K. Thompson, followed in 1945. His works also included literary reference books, including his multi-volume "London Stage: 1660 to 1800". Stone's final published writing came in a 1979 book he co-wrote with George M. Kahrl, called "David Garrick: A Critical Biography".
It's also worth noting, that Stone wrote articles for journals, that included the publications of the Modern Language Association, for which he served as executive secretary and president.
George Winchester Stone, Jr. was a well-known author, editor and professor, who specialized in the 18th-century Literature and whose works included a 12-volume history of London theater. He also held the post of president of the Modern Language Association.
Stone received three Guggenheim Fellowships (1950, 1951 and 1963) and a Fulbright Fellowship.

1965Stone was a member of the Cosmos Club, the Society of Emeriti of George Washington University and the board of the American Council of Learned Societies.
George was married to Hellen D. Stone, who died in January 2000. Their marriage produced several children, including Katharine Schneider, Virginia Babcock and George W. Stone III.
