Thomas worked with various engineering firms in New York City until World War I. Then, in 1915, George Thomas went to England to make small engine parts for the British Air Board. There he met and married Florence Vandamm, who was operating a portrait studio in London's West End. George Thomas became interested in the profession, joined his wife, and the two added illustration and fashion photography to the portrait work. In 1923 they came to New York, establishing a business there that came to specialize in theatrical photography. While Florence Vandamm conducted most of the studio work, George Thomas was in the theaters, photographing the shows.
