George Thomson joined Beaverbrook’s staff in 1931 after writing several books on Scottish history, including The Rediscovery of Scotland and Caledonia: Or, The Future of the Scots. He also wrote a novel, Whiskey, under the pseudonym Aeneas MacDonald in 1930. As aide to Lord Beaverbrook, he accepted a position as journalist for London’s Evening Standard, and also wrote a column for the Sunday Express.
