Sir George Thorold, 1st Baronet of Harmston, Lincolnshire, was a leading London merchant.
Background
He was the fourth son of Charles Thorold, who had an ironmonger"s business in London as well as an estate in Harmston, by his second wife, Anne Clarke, the daughter of George Clarke. He was born about 1666, and followed his father into the ironmongery business.
Career
Sir George was Sheriff of London, 1710-1711, and Lord Mayor of London, 1719-1720. Alexander Pope described his procession as Lord Mayor:
He died without surviving issue in Bloomsbury Square, London, on 29 October 1722 aged 56 and was buried at Harmston on 11 November. Sir Samuel Thorold, 2nd and last Baronet, was High Sheriff of Lincolnshire, 1724-1725.
