At Imperial College London he gained a Bachelor of Science in Physics, then obtained a Doctor of Philosophy in Physics from Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge.

He went to Laxton Grammar School (now part of Oundle School) on North Street in Oundle. He then become Head of the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of East Anglia. He contested North West Norfolk in 1992.

He was Member of Parliament for North West Norfolk from 1997 to 2001, when he lost his seat back to Henry Bellingham of the Conservatives, whom he had defeated in 1997.
