Studied at Oscott College, Birmingham.
Served in the Royal Navy, 1848-1852. Joined the 33rd Regiment in Crimea, and served in the Mutiny and afterwards in the West Indies as Aide-de-camp to General Basil Brooke, prior to which he was Aide-de-camp to Sir Henry Somerset, Commander-inChief at Bombay. Cousin and lieir-pres. of 7tli Earl of Lisburne.
