Converse, George Albert was born on May 13, 1844 in Norwich, Vermont, United States. Son of Shubael and Luvia (Morrill) Converse.

Education

Educated Norwich public schools, 1852-1858, Norwich U., 1858-1861. Graduated from the United States Naval Academy, 1865 (Bachelor of Science, Norwich U.).

Career

Served on steam sloop Canandaigua, European squadron, 1865-1867. Promoted ensign, December, 1866. Promoted through grades to rear admiral, November 8, 1904.

In torpedo service, 1869-1872. On Asiatic Station, 1872-1874. Instructor Torpedo Station, 1874-1877.

Served in United States Ship Marion, 1877-1879, Lancaster, 1883-1884. Instructor Torpedo Station, 1885-1889. Commanding Enterprise, 1890-1891.

In Bureau of Ordnance, 1891-1892. In charge Torpedo Station, 1893-1897. Commanded United States Ship Montgomery, cruiser, N. Atlantic squadron, 1897-1899.

In bureau of Navigation, 1899-1901. Commanding battleship Illinois, 1901-1903. Chief bureau of Equipment, 1903-1904.
