(Study the dynamic art of portrait miniatures in Portrait ...)
Study the dynamic art of portrait miniatures in Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors by art historian George Williamson, which surveys the works of the artists who made portrait miniatures. Williamson explains that the practice of portrait miniature originated in manuscript illustration, and may also be an outgrowth of treaties and maps, which often attached portraits of ambassadors for verification. "Miniature" in this context refers to the fact that the paintings were actually portable. The book begins with a 40-page essay and is followed by dozens of reproductions of the paintings discussed within the text. Williamson identifies Hans Holbein as the greatest painter of portrait miniatures and he presents several examples of Holbein's art, explaining what it is that makes the examples 'masterworks'. One of the portraits pictured in the book was on loan from J.P. Morgan's private collection and many of the portraits reproduced for the book were leant by their famous collectors. Englishmen Samuel Cooper is considered the greatest English practitioner of portrait miniatures. Little is known about Cooper's life even to this day, and Williamson connects the dots that are known about his life supported by evidence from the paintings. In the 18th Century, painters like Richard Cosway refined the techniques of Holbein, Cooper and others. Williamson helpfully notes that painters of the era were under different conditions than their predecessors. The public wanted paintings done faster and lighter, and with more charming and sensitive tones, and the reproductions attempt to illustrate this change in portrait miniatures. Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors concludes with Sir William Ross, who many consider the last of the great miniature portrait artists. Although the art may have gradually died out, the examples cited in this book are inspirational and the art lives on in collections and museums around the world. Portrait Miniatures From the Time of Holbein to That of Sir William Ross: a Handbook for Collectors was written for collectors, but anyone interested in art will enjoy the essay and paintings. Not illustrated. 1907 Excerpt: ... who stand near by, and who are bewildered by the movements and activity of the Child. In several of these pictures Luini's favourite flower, the jasmine, occurs, sometimes grasped by the Child and sometimes growing near by, as in the mysterious fresco at Madrid. It also adorns the head of St. Catharine in more than one picture. The Madonna of the Rose Hedge, one of the most lovely of all Luini's pictures, is the only one in which roses are presented, and in it the curly-headed Boy is full of wonderful beauty, and has those expressive and far-seeing eyes which lead to a comparison with the Child in the Madonna di San Sisto, and give rise to the phrase applied to Luini as the Raphael of Lombardy. The picture in Naples is almost equally lovely, and that, with the one at Ca Capello and the two at BudaPesth, are perhaps the finest of Luini's representations of the Madonna and Child. The large fresco at Madrid gleams out from a very dark background, and contains a dignified figure of St. Joseph in the rear. It is noteworthy however for the importance of the two children embracing one another at the foot of the picture. This beautiful scene exists also, separately, at Madrid, with slightly different position, and is the same motif, differently drawn in each case, which is to be seen in the Morelli group at Bergamo, in one of the two Buda-Pesth pictures, in the picture at Langton, and in its fullest perfection in the lunette at Lugano. A drawing in Indian ink of three children, preserved at the Ambrosiana,v is almost certainly one of the studies made for this oftrepeated group. The daughter of Herodias bearing the head of St. John Baptist was a popular subject, especially in Lombardy, and Luini was commissioned to paint it many times. He always characteristically ...

(It is not quite certain when Pietro Vannucci (called from...)
It is not quite certain when Pietro Vannucci (called from the name of his adopted town Perugino) was born, but the place of his birth he himself announces in his signature. Probably his birth took place in 1446 or 1447 at the little town of Castello della Pieve, now called Città della Pieve, as it was raised to the dignity of a city in 1601 by Clement VIII. His signature preserves, in the words "Petrus de Castro Plebis," the older name of his birthplace. Vasari gives his father's name as Christofano, and tells us that he was a poor man; but Mariotti reminds his correspondent that the family, although a poor one, was not of low condition, as it had enjoyed the rights of citizenship since 1427. He also mentions that one Pietro Vannucci was in 1424 a member of the Guild of Stone-workers, and that in 1428 a member of the family signed himself proudly as citizen of Perugia. It is probable that Vasari's story of the boy having been brought into Perugia at a tender age and put as shop drudge with a painter in that city is correct. Città della Pieve is not more than some twenty-five miles from Perugia, and although the town is near to Chiusi, yet Perugia, as the capital of the district of Umbria, is the more important place, and to it naturally would the lad be taken. Vasari speaks of the unknown painter to whom the youthful Pietro Vannucci was sent as one who "was not particularly distinguished in his calling, but who held the art in great veneration and highly honoured the men who excelled therein."

A. de Pass, the collector who also owns what is in my opinion the finest head of a man by Andrew, as I have mentioned in my last chapter. There are no initials on this miniature, and the face is unusually sharply cut and well modelled for the work of Nathaniel. The countenance of the man is very white and cold, his features are hard, and not so expressive as were those of Mr. Sprot, but the work is very similar, and the effect is almost as good, although not so pleasing by reason of its strange coldness and want of life. The portrait is in an original frame, with a hinged glass cover, and well repays close examination, but it is, I think, much later than the fine works which were done in 1787, 1788, and 1789. There is a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery which is BARON THOMAS DIMSDALE, MRS. DAWES M D., F.R.S. 1778 NATIONAL PORTRAIT GALLERY COLLECTION OF THE LORD HOTHFIELD ми. (Historical Handbooks is I somewhat different from that of...)
Historical Handbooks is I somewhat different from that of any other guides at present before the public. They do not compete or clash with such existing works ;they are rather intended to supplement than to supplant them. My purpose is not to -direct the stranger through the streets and squares of an unknown town towards the buildings or sights which het may desire to visit ;still less is it my design to give him Jpractical information about hotels, cab fares, omnibuses, LT tramways, and other every-day material conveniences. For such details, the traveller must still have recourse to the trusty pages of his Baedeker, his Joanne, or his Murray. I desire rather to supply the tourist who wishes to use his travel as a means of culture with such historical and antiquarian information as will enable him to understand, and therefore to enjoy, the architecture, sculpture, painting, and minor arts of the towns he visits. In one word, it is my object to give the reader in a very compendious form the result of all those inquiries which have naturally suggested themselves to my own mind during thirty-five years of ,foreign travel, the solution of which has cost myself a good deal of research, thought, and labour, beyond the facts -which I could find in the ordinary handbooks. JF or several years past I have devoted myself to collecting :and arranging material for a set of books to embody the idea I had thus entertained.
