Studied at Downing College, Cambridge.
Obtained an Entrance Scholarship, 1870, and Whitworth Engineering Scholarship, 1871. Educated as an engineer at the Crewe Locomotive Works of the L. & North. West. Railway. Resident Engineer to the building of great iron Rotunda of the Vienna International Exhibition of 1873.
Member of the International Jury of this Exhibition, section of Prime Mover.
Secretary of the Institution of Naval Architects, 1878 -1901. Chairman of Board of Public Works, Ireland. Cartulary-register 1906.
