Ramsay, George Douglas was born on February 21, 1802 in Dumfries, Virginia, United States. Son of Andrew and Catherine (Graham) Ramsay.

Education

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1820.

Career

Commissioned First lieutenant, 1st Artillery, 1826, adjutant to regiment, 1833. Commissioned captain of ordnance, 1835-1861, commanded arsenals in Washington, District of Columbia, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Georgia, 1835-1845. Brevetted major for distinguished service at Battle of Monterey, 1847.

Chief of ordnance, 1847 48. Major 1861, lieutenant colonel, 1861, colonel ordnance, 1863, brigadier general and chief of ordnance United States Army, 1864. Inspector of arsenals, 1864-1866.

Brevetted major general, 1865.
