In the first part of my career I was interested in straightforward questions about how labour markets work and also in how to integrate unionism into an economic framework. In the 1970s I became interested in how government policies influence labour market outcomes. During the 1980s I have been working on the question of why relative wage rates do not adjust as rapidly as they ‘should’ and what this implies about macroeconomic adjustment.
