(This book tells the story of wildlife imported to areas n...)
This book tells the story of wildlife imported to areas not naturally their own and the changes they reaped on the flora and fauna. Jamaican plantation owners imported the mongoose to kill rats; it ended up killing their chickens. Sentimental expatriates thought rabbits would be nice in Austrailia and soon they were building a continent-wide rabbit fence. On the other hand, a judge from Oregon returned from the Orient with the ringed-neck pheasant and he has been a sportsman's hero ever since. From songbirds to snails, from game fish to Russians boars, men have optimistically scoured the earth in search of new species which would enrich their lives. The pitfalls in this continuing game of wildlife roulette are many; the successes have been few. But the efforts continue - African wildlife now roams in the American Southwest and periodically sportsmen are promised some new and wonderful game bird or fish. In this book, a nationally known writer and outdoorsman has written a lively account of thee persistent and well-meaning efforts - an account that includes some of the most remarkable tales in natural history. George Laycock is the author of "The Sign of the Flying Goose", a guide to the National Wildlife Refuges, and "The Deer Hunter's Bible". His articles have appeared in Sports Illustrated, Argosy, Field and Stream, and Outdoor Life.

( To know how the West was really won, start with the ex...)
To know how the West was really won, start with the exploits of these unsung mountain men who, like the legendary Jeremiah Johnson, were real buckskin survivalists. Preceded only by Lewis and Clark, beaver fur trappers roamed the river valleys and mountain ranges of the West, living on fish and game, fighting or trading with the Native Americans, and forever heading toward the untamed wilderness. In this story of rough, heroic men and their worlds, Laycock weaves historical facts and practical instruction with profiles of individual trappers, including harrowing escapes, feats of supreme courage and endurance, and sometimes violent encounters with grizzly bears and Native Americans.
