This book was digitized and reprinted from the collections of the University of California Libraries. It was produced from digital images created through the libraries’ mass digitization efforts. The digital images were cleaned and prepared for printing through automated processes. Despite the cleaning process, occasional flaws may still be present that were part of the original work itself, or introduced during digitization. This book and hundreds of thousands of others can be found online in the HathiTrust Digital Library at www.hathitrust.org.

(Noetic Synthesis as Distinguished from A ssociation. By n...)
Noetic Synthesis as Distinguished from A ssociation. By noetic synthesis I mean that union of presentational elements which is involved in their reference to a single object; or, in other words, in their combination as specifying constituents of the same thought. It is by noetic synthesis that those complex psychical units come into being which we call percepts, ideas, and concepts. All these words imply something which is perceived or conceived, or of which we have an idea ;and it is this objective reference which constitutes each of them a unit in mental process. This kind of synthesis has a twofold application, according as the elements unified are themselves anoetic or noetic. As an example of the first case, we may take our recognition of persons by means of peculiarities in their appearance which we are unable to analyse, so that, if any alteration took place, although we should notice the difference, we should not be able to detect wherein it consisted. Similarly, we may be able to identify a musical note as having a certain timbre, without being able to distinguish the overtones which give it its peculiar quality. But the second application of noetic synthesis is most important for the detailed explanation of mental process. It is to be VOL. II. (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

philosopher psychologist university professor
Stout, George Frederick was born on January 6, 1860 in South Shields.
Born in South Shields, he studied psychology at Cambridge University from under James Ward.
Like Ward, Stout employed a philosophical approach to psychology and opposed the theory of associationism. lieutenant was as a fellow of Saint John's College, Cambridge (1884-1896), that Stout published his first work in 1896: the two-volume Analytic Psychology, whose view of the role of activity in intellectual processes was later verified experimentally by the Swiss psychologist Jean Piaget. Stout was appointed to a new lectureship in Comparative Psychology at the University of Aberdeen in 1896, before becoming reader in mental philosophy at the University of Oxford (1898–1902), where he published his Manual of Psychology in 1899.
This work formulated many principles later developed experimentally by the Gestalt school of psychology.
Leaving Oxford, from 1903 to 1936, Stout served as professor of logic and metaphysics at Saint Andrews, Fife, where he published another major work, Mind and Matter in 1931. He remained at Saint Andrews until his retirement thirty years later, in 1936.
He died in Sydney in 1944. Over the course of his career, Stout taught a number of notable students, including G. East. Moore and Bertrand Russell at Cambridge University.
In addition, from 1891 to 1920, he served as editor of Mind, a leading philosophical journal, and was president of Aristotelian Society from 1899 to 1904.
In metaphysics, Stout is well known for his contribution to trope theory, specifically in the form of a 1923 paper for the Aristotelian Society.

(This Is A New Release Of The Original 1896 Edition.)
Stout absorbed the essentials of the system of his teacher. James Ward, but transformed and extended them into an original system of his own. He claimed this combined idealism and realism as well as rationalism and empiricism. He acknowledged indebtedness to various sources and sought to come to terms with the analytical philosophy of the younger Cambridge philosophers, Russell. Moore and Wittgenstein. Among Stout’s central ideas were that thought always implies something real in what is thought about; that, instead of thinking of mind and body as separate substances, it is better to think of a dualism of attributes combined in a single entity, the embodied self; and that conative activity is involved in all human processes, even in those of cognition. Stout's influence was limited, partly because of the emergence of behavioural psychology and partly because of the reaction amongst philosophers against speculative systems. However, his collaborator, C. A. Mace, wrote of him: ‘There is probably no philosopher who in his own thinking so smoothly made the transition from the prevailing idealism of the late nineteenth century to the prevailing critical, non-speculative philosophy of the mid-twentieth century. Something of the idealist tradition is preserved in his sophisticated defense of philosophical animism, but more important are his detailed contributions to the transition from the philosophy of mind of the nineteenth century to that of the twentieth".
