George Gustav Heye

Background

Heye, George Gustav was born on September 16, 1874 in New York City. Son of Gustav and Marie Antoinette (Lawrence) Heye.

Education

Electrical Engineer, School of Mines, Columbia University, 1896. Doctor of Philisophy, University of Hamburg, 1929. Formerly member firm Battles, Heye & Harrison, bankers.

Started American anthropological collection, 1903, which developed into the Heye Museum.

Founded the Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation, 1916, endowed it, turned over entire collection of nearly half a million specimens, and became its director Honorary fellow Royal Anthropological Institute (London).

Honorary member Order of Indian Wars.
